Consistency Monday to Monday® – 4 Steps to Commitment

Are you one of many who have committed to a New Year’s Resolution?  Are you still committed?  By January 15th of every year, only 1% is still committed to their resolutions.  I can attest to this.  I teach fitness when I’m not traveling.  Everyone is excited to stick to a workout plan and healthy lifestyle the beginning of the year.  By January 15th the gym has gotten quieter.

Consistency is a key element of influence. Inconsistency leads to a lack of trust. If people don’t trust you, they won’t act on your recommendations or follow your lead.

Good leaders show up and are influential in the moment. Influential leaders show up for every moment. You can’t discount the importance of a 140-character tweet, a quick after-hours text to a client or the description on your profile or corporate website. When your message, actions and presence are consistent, your influence grows. Consistency means that no matter whom you communicate with, what medium you communicate through or when you interact with someone, you are always seen as confident, credible and trustworthy. Someone who follows you on social media has the same experience as they do talking with you one-on-one.

Consistency makes you relevant. When your message and your delivery match – no matter how, when or where you communicate – you will stand out from the crowd and your message will stick.

Consistency eliminates doubt in your listeners’ minds.  In face-to-face interactions (where individuals can see each other, whether that be in person or virtually), all three communication pieces are present – verbal, visual and vocal. When those three are in sync, we build trust and create a standout experience for listeners that they will remember long after the interaction is over.  They’re not guessing whether or not they should trust and follow your recommendations.

To take your career to the next level, you have to be influential Monday to Monday®. Imagine the reputation you would create for yourself and the level of influence you would have if you put the same amount of effort, focus and preparation into every interaction.

Take Action This Week

  1. Commit. Write down 3 actions you’re willing to commit to this year.  Focus at least one of your action steps on your verbal and non-verbal communication.
  1. Share. Ask someone you can trust to check-in with you weekly to make sure you stay committed.
  1. Watch and Listen. Video or audio record yourself at least five times a week.  Do you come across the way you want your listeners to perceive you?
  1. Take action. Review your action steps daily or weekly. Commit to seeking constructive feedback about how you can enhance your communication and the other action steps you have committed to.
